Study Abroad Program Choices
Study abroad program choices are multiple and varied. This important decision to study abroad will likely be one of the more significant decisions you’ll make as a young adult. Wherever you choose to embark on an exciting adventure that is sure to leave an indelible and positive impact on the rest of your life.
Study Abroad in Paris
The first decision, of course, is where you want to study. Paris is universally considered one of the most beautiful cities in the world. No city in the world can claim a more impressive collection of museums and cultural offerings. Its culinary reputation is world-renowned. Music, dance, theater and cinema offerings for every style and interest one can imagine are available throughout the year.
English Language or Foreign Language Country
For many Americans, even those who have taken numerous language courses in high school and then in college, the challenge of spending an extended study period in a non English language country can be a scary idea to consider. At PICA we understand both sides of this question: the scariness of not being 100% fluent in the local language–and the excitement of discovering a very different culture and language which enables us to grow so much. At PICA we have made a conscious decision to try to offer English language courses along with continued study of the French language as a way of enabling students who have little or no mastery of the French language to benefit from all the wonderful experiences to be had in Paris and France. The challenge of being in a country with a foreign language is undeniable but if students are willing to take up this challenge and work to try to continually improve their French language skills they will obtain a remarkable sense of their own courage and fortitude in addition to learning so much about themselves and the world around them.
Study abroad is a breathtakingly powerful experience for most students and one which will change and mark them for life. Because studying abroad means many adjustments and adapting to a new culture, a language which you may not master, the study abroad experience is challenging. Being away from family and friends, beginning to negotiate the cultural and linguistic differences are challenges every study abroad student must overcome. All of the PICA staff and faculty have already undertaken these same experiences and understand how the process works and will share with students their own experiences and advice about how best to adapt to the challenges of the study abroad experience. As we are determined to keep the PICA program small and personal while offering numerous extracurricular activities, students are able to establish stronger connections among themselves and with faculty and staff which enables them to feel part of a larger, dynamic and supportive community.
Quality Educational Opportunity
Students have endless choices where they will go for their study abroad experience. Paris? Elsewhere in France? Somewhere else in Europe? So many choices! PICA has been set up by artists and scholars who are passionate about their own artistic and academic pursuits with the wish to share this passion with students. Classes are structured more like seminars than lecture classes in an effort to encourage interaction and to help students develop their own deeper understanding of the subjects studied. Class sizes are kept small so that students receive lots of one-on-one attention from their instructors.
Reduced Study Abroad Costs
PICA strives to keep its tuition at an affordable level to allow students with limited economic resources to benefit from the life changing experience study abroad offers. Unlike many study abroad programs which are owned by bankers, business men or university programs trying to maximise their profits, PICA has been created by educators who are passionate about sharing their knowledge with students. We have endeavoured to create a small program that allows students to have close contact with their teachers and allows students an authentic experience of living and studying in Paris.
